Globe and Mail

 To whom it may concern:
Jorge Martin Melchor Garcia is an excellent fixer, translator, driver, photographer, and journalist. He helped make my recent assignment inMexico City for the Globe and Mail, Canada's national newspaper, an unprecedented success. We worked in advance to develop a list of story ideas, and to set up a schedule so that I could make the most of my short time on the ground. He advised me on story angles, sent me research and files, and helped finetune the focus of the three feature stories I ended up doing. During my 10-day trip, he ably, cheerfully and patiently assisted us to track down and interview everyone from economics professors to victims of robberies. He set up a key contact with a drug addict --not an easy interview to land, as well as with the doctors and nurses at a rehabilitation centre. He was prepared to work long days, navigate snarling traffic jams and repeatedly pester government spokespeople, so that we could get all the elements we needed for our stories. He also understood our visual needs, and helped ensure we got the best photographs possible, paying attention to context, light, mood and variety. He helped us with our multi-media package, driving us literally all over the city, including to barrios that we would have been hesitant to enter on our own. His invaluable insights, conversation and advice make him one of the best fixers I have ever had the pleasure of working with. When I returned to Canada, he also helped me fact check certain details and, when the swine flu story broke, assisted me over the telephone to understand the story, as it unfolded. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further information about Mr. Melchor Garcia.
